Imperial War Museum

On Monday we headed to Manchester to visit the Imperial War Museum.  We followed the timeline from 1914 right the way through to the present day.  We learnt about how war has effected people's lives.

We got to watch the 360 Big Film which projected onto the walls of the main gallery, We watched a short film called Children at War which was made up of real children's experiences of war, past and present.

We also went up to the Air Shard (this represents the wars fought in the skies).  Some of us had to face a fears to make it to the top!

Our final exhibition was Horrible Histories, Blitzed Brits, which had lots of interactive activities for us to take part in.

World War 2

We started our new term with a fantastic new topic!
We had a visit from a Royal Air Force Officer who gave us the news that our Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, would be going public with the declaration of war on Germany.  Our first task was to create an information poster to help the general public understand why we are at war.

Check out our new working wall and our display.

Last Day of Term Fun!

Our fun activities today were all Greek themed.

Our fist activity saw us become fashion designers.  We had to research Ancient Greek clothing, then design and make an outfit out of bin liners.

We even had a fashion show!

We then had a food tasting session.  The olives didn't go down well though!

Feta, dips, pitta and olives.

We then had yogurt with honey for dessert.
YUMMY!

The Trojan War

As part of our Ancient Greek topic, we have been learning about the Trajan war.  We learnt that Homer, a famous Greek writer, told of the famous war in the Iliad.
In groups, we acted out the key parts of the story, before splitting up into the Greeks and the Spartans for the final showdown!
We then made our own Trojan horses out of clay.

Mandarin

This week, we had our first taste of Mandarin!

Our Mandarin teacher, Lou Lou, taught us a few key phrases and a song.
We're looking forward to our next session!

A Modroc Masterpiece!

Stage two of our Greek masks saw us experiencing the VERY messy media of Modroc.  Modroc is a bandage of plaster of paris - we had to cut it into strips, then wet it, before molding it over our masks.
Although it got very messy, we all really enjoyed using this to help us create our masterpieces.
Next stage, painting!

What stuck with you this week?

Hoplite Training

This week we have been learning about Ancient Greek warfare.  We learned about why they needed an army and a navy; how their infantry, called hoplites, fought during city state's disputes;  and even became historians, examining artifacts to learn more about this area of Greek history.

We even did some hoplite training of our own.

We learned why it was important to fight in an organised and strategic manner known as the phalanx.
But, we were no match for the army of Miss Mapp and Mrs Tredwell!

So we learned about how the Greeks also used catapults, battering rams and crossbows to help the conquer other lands and people.

How Healthy Are You?

On Tuesday, we had a theatre group visit us.  They performed a two man show that taught us all about the importance of exercise, healthy eating and reading packaging on our food to check for hidden salt and sugar.

During the show, they even got a few of us up to help demonstrate the circulatory system.

This got us thinking...how much sugar do we consume without even knowing it?
Time to do some research!

Comedy vs Tragedy

As part of our Ancient Greek topic, we have been researching the origins of the comedy and tragedy masks.  We learned how they help the actors portray feelings and project their voices.
We decided to design our own version and began by looking at our own facial expressions using mirrors.  Miss Mapp had a lot of fun making us pull funny faces!

We then planned two different designs.
Before getting some feedback from a peer.
Then we decided on our final design and began to create our own mask using card and tissue paper.  We will finally add Modroc then paint next week.

Watch this space for our final masterpieces!

Measuring

During our maths session this week, we have been estimating and measuring capacity.

What a Drama!

In literacy, we have begun to study the Shakespeare play, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.  To get to know the very complicated plot we have been immersing ourselves in the characters through lots of drama and role play.

We became Hermia and discovered the anguish of having to marry someone we didn't love.
Before deciding to run away with our one true love, Lysander.
Demetrius, Hermia's betrothed, was not happy and gave chase, followed closely by Helena, into the woods...
Where the fairies started to play havoc with the quartet of lover's lives.

Will everything turn out alright?  Or will this comedy turn into a tragedy?

Our New Topic

We started our new topic this week - the Ancient Greeks.  So far, we have investigated: their place in history; how Alexander the Great helped to build the empire; also the fascinating lives of the Athenians and Spartans.

We even had an open morning on Wednesday, which invited our parents to come into the classroom to see what we're getting up to.

Presentation Night!

On our last night we had a presentation which celebrated an amazing week.

Our winners were...

Leah wins the Joker award for keeping us all entertained and laughing the whole week.

Georgia wins the Bottle award for overcoming her fears this week.

Faith wins Superstar for being amazing all week.

Although we can only give 3 awards, all the children have been brilliant all week and have made us so proud.  Well done, Albert Village Crew!
